How to get your license renewed in Manitoba

How to get your license renewed in Manitoba

Unfortunately, licences for driving vehicles have an expiration date. While it might be tempting to drive with expired licence, it's risky and insecure for you, your passengers, and everyone around you. In this short guide, we'll cover everything you need to know to renew your driver's licence in Manitoba so you don't have any issues.

Your Temporary First Driver’s Licence

Your Temporary First Driver’s Licence

When you get your first Manitoba driver's licence, they'll give you a temporary certificate which is valid for 45 days. You can use it as a regular driver's licence and don't need to renew it. The permanent driver's licence will arrive to you by regular mail before the period expires.

Make Sure Your Licence Is Valid

The expiry date on your licence is printed on the front. This date is always four months minus one day after your birthday. There’s no "licence expired" warning. If you keep driving after that date, then there can be severe consequences.

In order to keep it valid, you need to pay for it every year before the expiry date. If you don't, then you might get a suspension for driving and you'll also be unable to earn credit in the Learner or Intermediate stage throughout the period you aren't licensed.

Two Types of Renewals

Based on what we've discussed before, there's an 'auto renewal' each year. Therefore, licence renewal Manitoba is processed when you pay the $65 fee to keep it active.

You'll need to reassess your driving capacity if you’re 75 or 80 years old. After 80 years, you'll need to do this every two years. If you’re a commercial driver, then you’ll need to reassess your licence every five years up to 45 years of age, every three years from 45 to 65, and each year from then onwards.

If you're one of the cases from the last paragraph, you need to go to an Autopac agent. In that instance, you'll renew the licence and your insurance. In addition to that, you’ll also be required to retake your photo every five years.

When you need to reassess your licence, you can pay in the following ways:

  • At mpi.mb.ca, using credit cards (Visa/Mastercard)
  • With your bank account
  • In an Autopac agent with cash, debit or credit cards, or cheque

Remember the annual fee to renew your licence, and bear in mind your Manitoba licence isn’t valid in the US. If you move to another province, then you should also check with the local authorities what the renewal procedures for your licence will be there.
